In the fall of 1997, two recent buyers of S2 6.9s (Jack Goode in CA, Bob Procter in KS) found each other through responses to a sailing BB. They joined forces to search for more 6.9 sailors. The S2 7.9 Class told them of Jeff Roy, RI, another 6.9 owner, who'd recently asked if they knew of any other 6.9 sailors. Those three began exchanging e-mails about their 6.9s and they quickly recognized how worthwhile it would be to other owners if all were able to share information about their boats. But how to do that?
Jeff Roy, a computer engineer, saw how valuable a website would be to attract and locate fellow owners. In December, 1997, his first version of the 6.9 website hit the internet, opening with a home page with color pictures of the S2 6.9 AND a BB. This was the opening message on its BB by its creator:
Name: Roy
E-Mail: j_roy
Date/Time: 12/6/97 11:27 PM
Subject: Welcome!
Body:
I am pleased to open the S2 6.9 Open Forum. Hopefully this page will become the focal point of discussion about the 6.9. Please post messages regarding any aspect of the boat, its history, use, performance, repair...
Since then, that first website and its later revisions has been accessed thousands of times and helped us locate over a hundred owners. Since then, we now understand the very close kinship that all 6.7s, 6.9s, and 22wks share with each other, and, we've become recognized as an official class association in U.S. sailing. It's not hard to imagine where we would be without Jeff's contributions. From our beginning, not only did he provide us with a twentyfour hour illuminated sign, a doorway, a comfortable meeting room with chairs and amenities, but also we gained his energetic participation.
Jeff, we, your fellow skippers know how much you've given since our beginning and we'll be forever grateful for your contributions. Our class -- and all owners -- will be forever indebted.
Thank you, Jeff. We wish you years of good sailing and fair winds in all of your future sailing adventures.
